today was really beautiful, but something sad happened on the way home this afternoon. stopped at a light and i see a kitten huddling underneath a truck a few cars ahead. i’m thinking, “be safe, kitty!” as soon as the cars begin to move, the kitten darts out and into my lane. i wonder if it made it across, but when the car ahead of me moves i see that the kitten’s laying in the road, twitching. it’s clearly been injured badly, but it’s still moving. i turn on my emergency lights and run out of the car, scoop up the kitten and take off. she’s very dirty, covered in burrs, and clearly has had a rough life. i google for emergency vets, but there aren’t any nearby and traffic is thick and slow moving. we’re not back in the car more than a few minutes before she stops gasping and writhing, and just lays there. when we get home, i wrap her up in some fabric and start digging in the back yard. the ground’s dry and rocky and i’m dripping with sweat when i finish. i take a few minutes and say a few words to myself and go inside. as soon as i picked her up i had wondered what could even be done to help, but i hope she was comforted a little bit in the last few minutes and knew something else was caring about her. now she’s resting under the tree out back. i had to give blackie an extra big hug tonight.
